One of Melbourne’s most iconic and treasured event venues, the Plaza Ballroom, played host to the second annual Melbourne Food and Wine Festival event, ‘Truly, Madly, Deeply Melbourne – Part 2’ on Wednesday 5 April, 2017.
On arrival, guests entered into a warmly lit pre-entry area and were treated to delicious canapes, sparkling champagne, and whisky and gin cocktails from the Melbourne Gin Company and Starward Whisky, by roaming vintage style mobile carts. The room was partitioned by billowy curtains sheer enough to expose what was waiting on the other side, and acted as a backdrop to display a short presentation of the history of the Plaza Ballroom.
When the curtains were drawn, the full scale of the setting excited all the senses and took your breath away – expansive long tables filled to bursting with floral arrangements and dimly lit candles – all set within the exquisite Spanish Rococo architecture, with its lofty high ceilings and original chandeliers.
Built in 1929, the Plaza Ballroom is a unique blend of historic beauty and contemporary elegance. With its open plan layout, it is a venue of choice for special events, weddings and corporate functions.
The dining experience was comprised of four innovative courses created by Executive Chef, David Ricardo and team. A first course of “Tinned Tuna” was a wonderful start to the gastronomic feast, presented in a lightly smoking tin that delighted guests with its ingenuity. Each course was beautifully matched by wines from event partner, Santa & D’Sas, a collaboration of the Santarossa and Di Sciascio families, who produce wines from the King Valley.
Throughout the night, guests could wander and enjoy the cheese station and whisky tastings at the bespoke style Starward Whisky Bar. Live entertainment by Sammy Sax and The Mad Hatters were a perfect accompaniment on the night with their smooth and soulful sounds.
